Diablo Road/Green Valley Road Pavement Rehabilitation Project, CIP A-365 and C-511

The Town of Danville is poised to receive $971,000 from the economic stimulus bill signed into federal law by President Obama on February 17th.  The bill titled the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) is intended to create jobs and jumpstart the nation’s sluggish economy while also investing in the country’s critical infrastructure.   The ARRA contains $27.5 billion in federal funding for ‘shovel-ready’ roadway projects, including $17.85 million allocated to Contra Costa County.  The bill also creates unprecedented accountability, transparency, and reporting requirements.  At any time, the public can visit http://www.recovery.gov to understand specifically where their tax dollars are being spent and how.

The Town of Danville’s allocation will be used to repair and resurface a 1.4-mile segment of Diablo Road from Green Valley Road to Avenida Nueva and a 0.7-mile segment of Green Valley Road from Stone Valley Road to Diablo Road.  These heavily travelled commute routes serving Danville and the unincorporated communities of Diablo and Blackhawk are worn from approximately 13,000 vehicles per day.  Potholes and cracks will be repaired, and the roadway surface will receive a new layer of asphalt concrete.  In addition, the project will fund repairs to the multi-use trail that extends along the north side of Diablo Road, a popular bicycling route to Mount Diablo State Park.  Finally, the funds will upgrade sidewalks, curb ramps, and traffic signals on Green Valley Road to enhance safety for school children who access Los Cerros Middle School and Monte Vista High School via Green Valley Road.

For more information about the project, contact Michael Stella, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer at 925-314-3316 or mstella@ci.danville.ca.us

El Pintado Road Pavement Rehabilitation Project, CIP C-402

In the summer of 2010, the Town plans to complete a pavement rehabilitation project on El Pintado Road between El Cerro Blvd and La Gonda Way. Failed segments of this street will receive a new asphalt driving surface to replace the surfaces that have deteriorated over time. Traffic striping and markings will be replaced as part of this project. This $130,000 project will be funded by Measure C Return to Source and Town General Purpose Revenue funds. For more information about the Pavement Management Program, please contact Ron Allen, P.E., Assistant Civil Engineer, at rallen@ci.danville.ca.us or ph. 925-314-3346.

Hartz Avenue Beautification Project, CIP A-391 and C-319

The Town is planning to improve the northern end of downtown Danville as part of the Hartz Avenue Beautification Project. This $1.9 million project, funded in part by voter-approved Proposition 1B, will renovate and enhance the streetscape between Railroad Avenue and Diablo Road to match historic Hartz Avenue to the south. Diagonal parking will be added as well as brick-banded sidewalks, drainage improvements, street trees, and new decorative street lights. The street will also be repaved. On-going discussions with abutting property owners is underway to assure property rights are respected and business operations will remain unimpeded during construction. This project represents another significant investment in the downtown area in the Town’s on-going effort to encourage residents to Shop Danville First.

For more information about this project, please contact Michael Stella, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer, at mstella@ci.danville.ca.us or ph. 925-314-3316.

North Osage Parking Lot Pavement Repair and Expansion Project, CIP A-466

In the spring of 2011, the Town plans to improve the existing north Osage Station Park parking lot, located at the end of Brookside Drive, just south of Paraiso Drive. The existing lot has marked parking spaces for 99 cars, but is undersized to accommodate current park uses. This project will increase the available parking supply, perform pavement repairs and resurface the existing lot, make circulation changes to the lot, and upgrade the landscaping. Three conceptual plan alternatives were reviewed by the Town’s Parks and Leisure Services Commission at meetings on March 10, 2010 and April 14, 2010. Based on public and staff input, the Commission recommended that Alterative A, be carried forward to final design. After making some minor modifications as recommended by the Commission, it is expected that 31 new parking spaces will be added, bringing the total number of parking spaces to 130.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring of 2011, and be finished in approximately four months. A phasing plan will be implemented during construction, allowing portions of the parking lot to remain open as the work progresses. Areas of the lot under construction will be fenced for safety. Alternative parking is available in the south Osage Station Park parking lot off of Orange Blossom Way, just north of El Capitan Drive. Additional overflow parking is available during non-school hours at Charlotte Wood Middle School (located at 600 El Capitan Drive).

The project is expected to cost approximately $466,000. The project is funded with Park Facilities revenue. For additional information, please contact Ron Allen, Assistant Civil Engineer, at 314-3346 or via email at rallen@danville.ca.gov.

     Sports Court Resurfacing Work

    Sports Court Resurfacing

    Sports Court Resurfacing

Tennis courts and basketball courts are some of many amenities available at Danville’s public parks.  Periodic resurfacing of the courts is necessary to maintain playability and to avoid more extensive repairs if neglected.  The tennis courts are available for drop-in use by the general public, but also generate revenue from Town-sponsored classes and private rentals.

A contract was recently awarded for resurfacing work at the courts.  The project is expected to cost approximately $50,000.  The dates below are the dates when work will be accomplished at each site.

For more information about the project, contact John Teixeira, Parks Supervisor, at 925-314-3416.

Osage Station Park Tennis Court Resurfacing – July 19, 2010 to August 1, 2010.

Oak Hill Park Tennis Courts Resurfacing (Monte Vista High School/Town-maintained courts only)- July 25, 2010 to August 15, 2010.

Woodbine Pedestrian Bridge Replacement Project, CIP B-512

Pedestrian-BridgeIn the fall of 2010, the Town plans to replace the existing 50-foot long Woodbine pedestrian bridge that crosses Green Valley Creek, connecting the southerly portion of Highbridge Lane with the Green Valley Shopping Center, located at 460 Diablo Road. The existing bridge needs to be replaced due to creek erosion at the abutments and deterioration of the wood deck. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2010 and be completed in spring of 2011. The new pre-manufactured bridge will be constructed of weathering steel, similar to other pedestrian bridges in Town. As a result of extensive engineering studies, the Town has determined that the new bridge should be located approximately 100 feet upstream of the existing bridge. The new location can be found on the map and the photograph to the right is of a similar bridge. The new bridge will be opened before the existing bridge is removed to allow for uninterrupted use by the public. The project is expected to cost approximately $290,000. The project is funded with a Transportation Development Act (TDA) grant and Park Facilities funds.
